Filey Swimming Club was formed in the mid-1970s following the opening of the swimming pool at Filey School, as successor to the Filey Swimming Baths Association which for many years worked to raise funds towards the building of the pool. We aim to provide instruction in swimming and related activities for local children and adults of all ages and abilities in a friendly and safe environment.
The Club is affiliated to the Yorkshire Amateur Swimming Association and is a member of the Scarborough Swimming Association. It is run entirely by volunteers, be they Committee members and/or Coaches, Teachers and Helpers, and is financed by annual membership fees, session subscriptions and fund raising and sponsorship, in the main by Thorpe & Co. Solicitors and also by Adrian Colling of Colling Butchers in Filey, who paid for T shirts for the B Team and Teaching Group swimmers. The majority of the volunteers came into the Club as interested parents when their own children were (or are still) swimming, but more help is always needed, and indeed invited, in all aspects of the Club including fundraising.
Filey Swimming Club has taught in excess of 200 children per week, which is more than any other organisation in the town. In addition to the teaching groups, there are two Coaching Squads and the only Masters section in the area, the age range covered overall being from 5 years to 55 years plus.
